Bucks County Symphony Orchestra Fall Concert

The Bucks County Symphony Orchestra, under the leadership of Music Director Gary S. Fagin, announces its annual Fall Concert, to be held at Delaware Valley University’s Life Sciences Auditorium on Saturday, October 26, at 8:00 pm.
The concert is sponsored by the Warren Family Foundation.
Featured in the program is acclaimed guitarist Jordan Dodson, joining the BCSO in a performance of Joaquín Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. Composed in 1939 by one of Spain’s most popular 20th century composers, this colorful work masterfully evokes the atmosphere of the composer’s native land. Mr. Dodson, who has been described by American Public Media’s Performance Today as “one of the top young guitarists of his generation,” is active as a soloist and chamber musician in New York and Philadelphia. One of two students selected to inaugurate the classical guitar studio at the Curtis Institute of Music, Mr. Dodson holds degrees from Curtis, the Manhattan School of Music, and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.
The BCSO opens its 67th concert season with the lush and serenely beautiful Fantasy on a Hymn Tune by Justin Morgan, composed by Pennsylvanian Thomas Canning in 1944. Written in response to Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Canning based his piece on the hymn tune “Amanda,” written in the 1790’s by Justin Morgan, known as much for his life as a Vermont horse breeder and developer of the Morgan horse as for his hymns and short choral works!
The BCSO concludes its fall performance with Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 9 in C Major, known as “The Great” to distinguish it from the less ambitious Symphony No. 6, the “Little C Major.” This great work was first performed more than a decade after the composer’s death in 1828 by the Leipzig Gewandthaus Orchestra conducted by Felix Mendelssohn. Although frequently criticized in early performances for its length and difficult string and woodwind parts, this symphony has become Schubert’s most celebrated orchestral masterpiece.
