ELIZABETH PITCAIRN

Violin virtuoso Elizabeth Pitcairn, born in Bucks County, began her violin studies at age 3 and made her orchestral debut at 14. She has earned a stunning reputation as a soloist, performing in partnership with one of the world’s most legendary instruments—the Red Mendelssohn Stradivarius of 1720—said to have inspired the Academy Award-winning film The Red Violin. She has appeared with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Academy of Musica and with many other great orchestras across the globe. Since making her NYC debut at Lincoln Center in 2000, she has performed at Carnegie Hall, Disney Concert Hall, the Kimmel Center, and Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

Passionate about youth and music education, Ms. Pitcairn serves as President and Artistic Director of the Luzerne Music Center, a summer camp and chamber music festival for gifted young students. On her tours, she makes time for school visits and gives master classes. A former member of the distinguished faculty at USC’s Colburn School of Music, she taught alongside her former teacher, Robert Lipsett. At the Marlboro Music Festival she performed with members of the Juilliard and Guarneri String Quartets.

Her discography includes recordings of Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bruch, Bizet, Brahms and Mendelssohn. Her recording of Hymns to the Night, commissioned by Swedish composer Tommie Hoaglund, earned her a Swedish Grammi nomination.
