The Bucks County Symphony Orchestra is pleased to announce the winners of the 2022 Helen Buckman Award, presented by the BCSO to an orchestra student at each Central Bucks high school who demonstrates exceptional dedication, leadership and musical ability. The award is named after a highly-regarded Central Bucks music teacher who was one of the charter members of the Symphony and who was largely responsible for establishing the strong link that has existed between the orchestra and our schools for over 60 years.
Recipients of the Helen Buckman Awards for 2022 are Matthew Enders, Julian Rosenfeld, and Gerald Zhou.
Matthew served as principal cellist in the Central Bucks East Concert and Chamber Orchestras, a role in which he led his section with great talent, kindness, and humility. He performed numerous solos during his tenure at East in addition to performing in the Youth Orchestra of Bucks County and small ensembles for special events. He participated in the BCMEA County Orchestra all six years of his secondary schooling. Matthew will pursue a degree in psychology at the University of Pittsburgh.
Violinist Julian Rosenfeld served as Co-Concertmaster in both Orchestra and Chamber Strings at CB West, and played first violinist in the West String Quartet. A member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society, he consistently demonstrated his dedication to the CB West Orchestra program, always putting great care into his playing. With musical knowledge and taste that spans many genres of music, his many contributions to his school’s Orchestra program were substantial and appreciated. Julian will attend Princeton University to study Mechanical Engineering.
Jerry Zhou Jerry was a member of String Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Senior String Quartet, Concert Band, and the Pit Orchestra at CB South, with a reputation as an exceptional leader of the CB South Orchestra program. His willingness to bring intelligence, kindness, humor, and dedication to the orchestra program rehearsals made him a standout student in the program and a person to whom the rest of the orchestra students often looked up. He will attend Boston University, majoring in Environmental Analysis and Policy.
The BCSO extends sincere congratulations to Matthew, Julian, and Gerald for their outstanding achievements in high school and for their ongoing commitment to musical excellence.
