Name That Tune: Melody in Western Music

How many Baroque-era melodies can you sing? How about Classical-era melodies? Not many? What about Tchaikovsky? Richard Rodgers? The Beatles? Can a memorable melody be quantified, defined by rules, as in counterpoint and voice leading? Or, to paraphrase Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart, do we just ”know it when we hear it”?
